about

This piece is takes the form of a simple, common form in Javanese gamelan known as a “ladrang” with two parts called “ompak” and “ngelik” (the ngelik is considered to be the higher portion in register). The vocalists interact in an unusual fashion during the ompak, trailing each other. The first time, Denok sings in strict canon. In the repeat, Aga follows and elaborates in free time. The piece starts in the tempo level I, tanggung, and quickly transitions to tempo level II, dados. The mode is pelog barang (23567 in kepatihan cipher notation).

lyrics

I want
To be pretty
Boys like me never learn’d
Is it too late to become me
Hope not
